Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Ravns Odde is a natural beach located on the south side of Skanderborg Lake in central Denmark, approximately 25 metres wide and bordered by reeds, trees and bushes. The beach features a large flat grassed area suitable for ball games and other recreational activities. Water depth is approximately 75 centimetres at the end of the bathing pier, and the bottom consists of sand and mud. The bathing water at Ravns Odde is classified as "Excellent", the highest classification a beach can receive.

Water

Skanderborg Lake is a freshwater lake with a surface area of 632 km². The lake consists of two nearly equal basins (Store Sø and Hylke Sø) and is part of the Gudenå river system. Mean water depth is 8 metres with a maximum depth of 18.8 metres. Summer water temperature ranges from 14 to 22 degrees Celsius.

Location

Ravns Odde is located on Skanderborg Lake in Skanderborg Municipality, central Denmark. Access is from Hylke Møllevej near the golf course. Parking is available.

Tables and benches, parking area, waste bins, bonfire area, dry toilet.

Season

Control monitoring of bathing water quality is conducted throughout the bathing season.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as "Excellent". Over 95% of water analyses from 2006–2009 showed values below 500 for E. coli and below 200 for Enterococcus. The beach is not exposed to significant faecal contamination from overflow events or scattered settlements.

Risks

High risk of cyanobacteria blooms during summer months, particularly after rainy periods followed by warm, calm, sunny weather. Cyanobacteria blooms can cause discoloured water, foam formation, algal blooms and potentially dead animals. Contact with algal toxins may cause diarrhoea, headache, skin irritation, fever and nausea. Risk is greatest when swimmers ingest algae-containing water; young children, immunocompromised persons and allergy sufferers are particularly vulnerable. Zebra mussels, an invasive species, have been present in the Gudenå system since 2006.
