Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Dakbjerg Strand is a small sandy beach approximately 7 metres long and 2 metres wide, located on the north-eastern side of Mossø lake in central Jutland. The beach is situated within a forest setting and is privately owned. The water is very shallow, making diving from the bathing platform inadvisable. The beach area behind the sand is grassed with trees.

Water

Mossø lake. The lake is 10 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide with a surface area of 16.9 square kilometres. Average depth is 9 metres with a maximum depth of 22 metres. The lake is divided into two basins by a shallow sandbar. Summer water temperature ranges from 14 to 22 degrees Celsius. The lake bed at Dakbjerg Strand is predominantly mud.

Location

Located on the north-eastern side of Mossø lake, approximately 800 metres east of Alken village in Skanderborg Municipality. Access is via Emborgvej at number 76. Parking is available at Dakbjerg hut.

Facilities

Large bathing platform, boat mooring, Dakbjerg Sailing Club, tables and benches, waste bins, tap with fresh water.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'satisfactory', the second-lowest classification. This classification is based on bathing water analyses from 2006-2009. Over 95% of E. coli measurements were below 500, but only 90% of enterococci measurements were below 330. High enterococci values were observed in two measurements from 2009, representing 10% of all measurements.

Risks

Overflow events from a pumping station near Alken approximately 600 metres away during heavy rainfall. Contamination from scattered dwellings and manure discharge via Monnes Å and Illerup Å tributaries. Algal blooms and blue-green algae occur annually, particularly after periods of rain followed by warm, calm, sunny weather. Wandering birds on the bathing platform may cause faecal contamination. Invasive zebra mussels are present in the Gudenå system.
