Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Sdr. Ege Strand is a popular bathing beach approximately 60 metres long located at Knudsø in Ry, Skanderborg Municipality. The beach features a 2-metre-wide sandy shore with a bathing pier, backed by a spacious grassy area with scattered tree cover. The bathing area is bounded by reed forest to the northwest and by trees and reed forest to the southeast. The beach displays a blue flag.

Water

Knudsø is a freshwater lake, part of the Gudenå system. The lake has a total area of 191 hectares, a maximum depth of 29 metres, and an average depth of 13.4 metres. The bathing area has a sandy bottom with the innermost approximately 15 metres being shallow water. Summer water temperatures range from approximately 14 to 22 degrees Celsius.

Location

Located at Knudsø in Ry, Skanderborg Municipality. The bathing areas are accessible by bus. Parking and facilities are available at the beach.

Facilities

Large bathing pier, information boards, tables and benches, waste bins with sorting, toilet facilities, grill facilities, bus connections, rescue post, beach volleyball courts, shower facilities, bonfire area, and disc golf net.

Bathing water monitoring is conducted throughout the bathing season.

Water Quality

The bathing water at Sdr. Ege Strand is classified as 'Excellent', the highest classification according to Danish bathing water regulations. This classification is based on recent years of bathing water analyses regarding faecal bacteria. The overall ecological status of Knudsø is moderate according to water management plans for 2015–2021.

Risks

Potential faecal contamination from overflow events during heavy rainfall from combined sewage systems and scattered settlement discharges. Algal blooms are a common phenomenon in the nutrient-rich lake and can periodically impact bathing conditions. Cyanobacterial blooms may occur and are assessed as a periodic health risk. The risk of cyanobacterial blooms can be evaluated based on total phosphorus content in the lake.
