Hornum Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Hornum Sø is a small lake covering 22 hectares with early signs of nutrient loading. The average depth is 1.46 metres, with a maximum depth of 2.6 metres. The lake is surrounded by low trees including birch, bushes, and agricultural land. The bathing area and parking area are grass-covered. The nearest larger town is Støvring, located 5.5 kilometres away.

Water

Small lake of 22 hectares with average depth of 1.46 metres and maximum depth of 2.6 metres. The catchment area is 7.89 square kilometres, draining primarily agricultural land. Water level is primarily influenced by rainfall. Visibility depth typically ranges between 0.5 and 1 metre during the bathing season.

Location

Exit the E45 motorway at junction 31 near Støvring and travel towards Øster Hornum on Nibevej. Continue through the town and turn onto Hornum Søvej approximately 2 kilometres beyond Øster Hornum. Continue for 900 metres and turn left at the T-junction. Parking and bathing area are on the right immediately after the T-junction. Parking coordinates (UTM zone 32, ETRS89): 545770, 6306790. Facilities

Parking area, camping area, portable toilet (summer season only), primitive shelters, bonfire area, water point in the southern corner, waste bins, tables and benches, fixed grill.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Classification is based on four consecutive bathing seasons and indicates low risk of high bacterial concentrations. Monitoring includes four mandatory bathing water analyses per season plus two additional analyses during school summer holidays. Results are published on the municipality's website.

Risks

Moderate risk of algal blooms and cyanobacteria blooms, particularly in mid to late August and during heat waves. Early signs of nutrient loading present. Minor risk of faecal pollution. Four neighbouring properties (100–250 metres from the lake) have permitted septic systems; two received notices for improved wastewater treatment in 2016. A manure pile with horse manure is located 100 metres north-east of the lake.
