Nibe Camping is a bathing beach located approximately 1 km southwest of Nibe in Limfjorden. The beach extends 400 metres in length with a width of 5–10 metres and features sand with large stones. Water sampling is conducted during the bathing season to analyse for E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria as indicators of potential faecal contamination.

Water

Limfjorden, shallow water area. Beach substrate: sand with stones. Water bottom: sand with stones. Water depth ranges from approximately 0.5 metres within 50 metres of shore, 1 metre at 100–150 metres offshore, and 1.5–2 metres at approximately 200 metres from shore. Salinity typically ranges from 22–30 ‰. Dominant current direction is from the north. Eelgrass is occasionally washed ashore.

Location

Approximately 1 km southwest of Nibe town. The bathing beach is located at Nibe Camping. A waste bin and toilet are available at the campground.

Bathing water samples are collected during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water classified as excellent based on data from bathing seasons 2020–2023. Monitoring during bathing season measures E. coli and intestinal enterococci. Possible pollution sources include two watercourses (one 500 metres north, one 100 metres south with insignificant flow), three nearby properties (two connected to sewerage, one using mechanical treatment with groundwater infiltration without permit), the campground (connected to Aalborg West Treatment Plant), and a rainwater-dependent outlet to the southern watercourse.

Risks

Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) occurrence at the water edge; large quantities may pose health risks due to toxin production in decomposing seaweed and protection of pathogenic bacteria from UV rays. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms in Limfjorden; contact with cyanobacteria can cause skin irritation and rashes, and ingestion may cause poisoning. Risk of phytoplankton blooms due to relatively high nutrient content; bathing in unclear water is discouraged. Glass fragments, litter, and chemical contamination including oil spills may occasionally occur. Persistent sea foam should be avoided as it may contain PFAS and algae.
