Husodde Strand is a Blue Flag beach located on the north side of Horsens Fjord in Denmark. The beach is approximately 700 meters long and consists of a sandy area 2–10 meters wide, with sand extending 10–20 meters into the water. Water depth increases gradually. The bathing water is classified as Excellent based on data from the previous year and three preceding bathing seasons. Husodde Camping adjoins the beach, and the surrounding area has urban development.

Water

Typical current direction is east–west on the north side of the fjord, with water from Bygholm Å flowing away from the beach.

Location

The beach is located on the north side of Horsens Fjord near Horsens, Denmark. Access is via Husoddevej. A parking area is available at the beach access point, where an information board displays details about the beach and its Blue Flag status.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent. Blue Flag status. Water quality is assessed based on data from the previous year and three preceding bathing seasons. Analysis results over five years show a correlation between exceedances of water quality requirements (E. coli and intestinal enterococci content) and rainfall intensity. Contamination is short-term, lasting maximum three days after heavy rainfall. An overflow structure west of the nearby Strandparken monitoring station can cause water quality impacts during heavy rainfall.

Risks

Heavy rainfall can cause temporary contamination with diluted wastewater through an overflow structure, resulting in elevated E. coli and intestinal enterococci levels lasting up to three days. Cyanobacteria blooms can occur, typically after rainy periods followed by warm weather, causing discolored water and foam. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) can accumulate along the shoreline. Cyanobacteria can produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. Children and immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable. Rotting seaweed can produce toxins and protect disease-causing bacteria from UV radiation. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills occasionally occur.
