Strand ved Gråstenvej is a sand beach located at Galgebjerg near Hundested in Halsnæs Kommune, Denmark. The beach is at least 0.5 km long and up to 250 meters wide in some areas. The sandy bottom has a gentle slope, though swimmers should be aware of potential rip currents near the wooden groynes built for coastal erosion protection. The beach is designated as a Blue Flag beach and has been classified as excellent quality based on water samples from 2018–2021.

Water

Sandy beach with sand bottom and small patches of seaweed forest. The beach extends at least 0.5 km and reaches up to 250 meters wide. Water current direction is primarily east-west, typically aligned with dominant wind direction. Rip currents can occur near groynes.

Location

Located at Galgebjerg, Hundested, accessed via Gråstenvej. A large parking area is available along Gråstenvej. An information board is posted at the beach entrance.

Facilities

Lifeguards present during swimming season from 10:00–17:00. Large parking area along Gråstenvej. Information board at beach entrance. Toilet facilities available. Blue Flag beach status. No swimming pier. No disabled access facilities.

Season

Lifeguards patrol from 10:00–17:00 during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on 16 samples from 2018–2021. The beach is enrolled in the voluntary Blue Flag scheme. Historical records show excellent classification since 2011, with only occasional periods of questionable quality before that. Galgebjerg stream discharges onto the beach but monitoring from 2010 showed no wastewater contamination. Bathing water quality has remained excellent in recent years.

Risks

Dangerous currents can occur near groynes; swimmers should follow lifeguard recommendations. Rip currents (rip holes) may form near groynes. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms occur rarely on the north coast but swimmers are advised not to bathe if water is unclear or if feet cannot be seen at knee depth. Seaweed (macroalgae) may be present; bathing near accumulations is not recommended due to potential toxin release and bacterial persistence. Occasionally encountered hazards include discarded waste, broken glass, dead seals, and oil spills.
