Coastal bathing water located on a non-urban beach with intensive use at Tavira Island. The beach is situated within the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, a Natura 2000 site and RAMSAR protected area. It features a wide golden sand beach with dunes and typical diversified flora, extending 600 metres along the shore.

Coastal water body with a tidal range of 3.4 metres and mean wave height of 0.5 metres. Predominant wind direction is east to southeast.

Location

Tavira Island, municipality of Tavira. Monitoring point coordinates: latitude 37.1098°, longitude -7.6199° (ETRS 89).

Season

1 June to 30 September. Monthly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality classification in 2023 complied with Decreto-Lei 135/09. No pollution sources are present in the vicinity. No days of bathing prohibition or restriction due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2023 bathing season.

Risks

Microbiological contamination is unlikely but may occur in rare cases of severe storms causing long-distance transport of pollutants. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is uncommon. Phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
