Kleiner Kaarster See is an artificial lake used for bathing located in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss region. The bathing area features approximately 330 metres of shoreline and 6,650 square metres of beach surface. The lake has been designated as an official EU bathing water since 1984. Water quality has been rated as excellent for four consecutive years (2022–2025). The lake is reserved primarily for swimmers, while other water sports activities take place on the adjacent larger Kaarster See.

Water

Artificial lake with a surface area of 50,000 square metres. Maximum depth of 7 metres with a mean depth of 3.6 metres. Water exchange time exceeds 30 days. Water temperature ranges from 9.1 to 26.5 degrees Celsius with a mean of 20.2 degrees. pH value ranges from 8.2 to 8.9 with a mean of 8.4. Water transparency averages 2.0 metres (range 1.5–>2 metres). Water conductivity averages 639 µS/cm. The lake has a direct water connection to the larger Kaarster See. Catchment area ranges from 10 to 100 square kilometres. The lake bed and substrate are sandy. Water body is stratified.

Location

Located in Grevenbroich and Kaarst in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district. Approximately 1,000 free parking spaces are available.

Facilities

Lifeguards, toilets, showers, and disabled access are available. Approximately 19,000 square metres of recreational area is provided.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The water body is rated as very lightly contaminated. Natural nutrient content indicates eutrophic conditions (category 3). No microbiological or chemical contamination of sediments detected. No evidence of cercariae (causing swimmer's itch).

Risks

Frequent occurrence of waterbirds between April and May causes impairment of water quality. Risk of cyanobacterial mass development is low. Risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton mass development is low.
