Kohage

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Kohage is a sandy beach approximately 300 metres long and 6 metres wide with scattered small and larger stones, located on the northern side of Flensborg Fjord east of Kollund Østerskov. The seabed consists of sand and stones, with water depth under 5 metres up to approximately 100 metres from the shore. The beach is adjacent to the residential area of Kollund Østerskov and surrounded by agricultural areas and forest.

Water

Flensborg Fjord. Water depth is under 5 metres within approximately 100 metres from the shore. The seabed composition includes both sand and stone. Current flow is typically in an easterly direction.

Location

Located on the northern side of Flensborg Fjord east of Kollund Østerskov in Aabenraa Municipality, Denmark. Parking is available at Fjordvejen west of the beach near a rest area with covered tables and benches. Public toilets are located approximately 500 metres east at Sønderhav.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality based on monitoring samples collected regularly during 2019–2023. Samples taken at the monitoring station are of excellent quality. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins. Potential faecal pollution sources include watercourses, canal outlets, combined sewer overflows, separate sewer outlets, wastewater discharges in sea pipes, and diffuse runoff over the beach. All households in the area are connected to public sewerage.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms, typically occurring after heavy rainfall followed by warm periods. Symptoms include discoloured water, foam formation, and dead animals. Exposure to cyanobacterial toxins can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) can occur at the water's edge; swimming is not recommended near large accumulations. Occasional pollution from glass, waste, chemical contamination, and oil spills may occur. Sudden contamination can result from accidents involving recreational boats, manure tanks, and sewer pipes.
