Sønderhav is a bathing beach located on the northern side of Flensborg Fjord opposite the Okseøernes islands. The beach is a triangular area with a small tongue of land extending into the water, featuring approximately 200 metres of coastline and varying widths of 1 to 40 metres. The beach is a sand beach with some marram grass and small amounts of gravel at the water's edge. The water bottom consists of sand, with depths reaching 5 metres at a distance of approximately 50 to 100 metres from the shore. The beach is classified as Excellent quality and is registered as a Blue Flag beach.

Location

The beach is located in the Sønderhav area on the northern side of Flensborg Fjord. There is a car park opposite the beach with an information board, rescue and first aid post, tables, benches, and a toilet building. A kiosk and car park in the immediate vicinity serve as a popular gathering place for motorcyclists and tourists, especially during summer.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Samples taken at the monitoring station show excellent quality. Classification based on control samples taken regularly during 2019 to 2023. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins. Ten control samples are taken during the bathing season, with results published continuously on the municipality's website.

Risks

Cyanobacterial blooms may occur, typically after periods of heavy rain followed by warm weather, characterised by unclear discoloured water, foam formation, and possible dead animals. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) can occur at the water's edge; bathing is not recommended near large amounts of macroalgae due to potential toxins in decomposing seaweed and protection of disease-causing bacteria from UV rays. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur. Risk of pollution during strong winds and rain showers, typically lasting a maximum of 3 days. Sudden contamination may occur from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewer lines.
