Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Kronborg Strand is a small sandy beach strip bordered by large stones located south of Helsingør Harbour near Kronborg Fortress. The beach is approximately 90 metres long and up to 50 metres wide. Water quality is classified as Excellent based on measurements from the four most recent seasons. The beach experiences occasional cyanobacteria blooms in rare cases during specific current conditions and after several days of calm, warm weather, and areas with seaweed and risk of phytoplankton blooms are present.

Water

Brackish water body (1–2% salinity) with sand bottom containing some stones. Approximately 2 metres deep at roughly 30 metres from the shore. Dominant current direction is from south to north. No risk of rip currents in shallow water.

Location

Located at Kronborg Fortress south of Helsingør Harbour. Paid parking is available directly by the beach. Local train (Lokalbanen) to Grønnehave provides public transport access. Kronborg Castle and an ice cream shop are nearby.

Facilities

Paid parking, ice cream shop, jetty, sampling point, life saving equipment, first aid equipment (10:00–18:00), toilet, disabled toilet, rubbish bins, waste separation facilities. No lifeguards. No shower facilities. No disabled access to beach facilities, but disabled toilet available at Nordhavnen. Dogs on leads permitted 1 April–30 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Station 309 monitored with 10 samples in 2024. No known pollution sources identified.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms may occur in rare cases during specific current directions and after several days of calm, warm weather. Areas with seaweed present. Risk of phytoplankton blooms.
