La Banchina Badezone

La Banchina Badezone is an unattended public bathing area located on Refshaleøen in Copenhagen, opened in 2020 and renovated and expanded in 2023. The zone is demarcated by a wooden jetty on the north side and a bridge with pontoons in front of the cafe on the south side, with swimmers required to stay on the north side. The water is salt with weak currents and depths of 2 to 4 meters. The bathing area is open to the public year-round and operates under a warning system that alerts visitors to poor water quality.

Located at Refshalevej 141A at cafe La Banchina on Refshaleøen, Copenhagen. Public toilets are available at Refshalevej 191, approximately 800 meters away. The nearest rescue post is on site.

Water Quality

Water quality classification in 2023 was Excellent. In 2022 it was Good. In 2021 it was Good. The bathing area was closed with red flags for a total of 280 hours during the 2023 bathing season, equivalent to 9.5% of the time. The nearest combined sewer overflow structure is over 650 meters away and is used on average 3 times annually. During periods of intensive rainfall, overflow discharges may cause bacterial contamination. An electronic sign on site warns of poor bathing water quality. Risk of cyanobacteria is assessed as relatively small. Risk of phytoplankton growth and macroalgae is assessed as relatively small.

Risks

Risk of bacterial contamination from combined sewer overflow during periods of intensive rainfall. Occasional contamination from glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. The bathing area is unattended and swimming is at one's own responsibility.
