La plage de la Mine d'Or is the largest beach in Pénestin, extending approximately 2 km between Rocher du Lomer to the north and Plage de Poudrantais to the south. It is located on the western coastal facade of Pénestin commune in Brittany, at the mouth of the Vilaine estuary. The beach features a natural shoreline with sand and rocks, characterized by relatively low slope and water transparency affected by proximity to the Vilaine estuary. The beach is subject to tidal variations, with lengths of 1675 m at high tide and 1700 m at low tide, and widths varying from 20 m at high tide to 180 m at low tide.

Location

Pénestin, Brittany, Morbihan department (56), France, at the mouth of the Vilaine estuary. The beach extends between Rocher du Lomer to the north and Plage de Poudrantais to the south, representing the largest beach in the commune.

Water Quality

The bathing site was classified as 'Good' quality in 2013. Water quality is affected by proximity to the Vilaine estuary, resulting in reduced water transparency. Monitoring includes bacteriological analysis and assessment of macro-algae and phytoplankton proliferation potential. Assessment of shellfish data is conducted. Identified pollution sources include rainwater runoff, domestic wastewater, agricultural activities, and diffuse pollution sources.

Risks

Potential pollution from rainwater discharge systems, domestic wastewater from inadequate sewage connections, agricultural activities, horse access during summer season, and dog frequentation. Macro-algae and phytoplankton proliferation potential have been assessed. Cliff erosion and rockfall occurred in May 2018 at the Mine d'Or cliff face.
