Coastal and transitional waters of Étang de Berre lagoon. Robinson beach has dimensions of 679 metres length and 5 metres average width, with sandy and pebble composition. Orientation East-Southeast. The lagoon receives water from natural tributaries including Arc, Touloubre, and Cadière rivers.

Étang de Berre lagoon, France. Beaches covered include Robinson in Rognac and others around the lagoon shore.

Season

Monitoring occurs during bathing season. Summer season monitoring is prioritized May through September.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to four categories: excellent, good, sufficient, or insufficient. Regulatory values for coastal and transitional waters apply: excellent quality (intestinal enterococci 100 UFC/100ml, E. coli 250 UFC/100ml at 95th percentile); good quality (200 and 500 respectively); sufficient quality (185 and 500 at 90th percentile). Robinson beach was classified as excellent in 2024. Monitoring parameters are intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli. Minimum four samples per season required for classification based on 16 samples minimum across four seasons.

Risks

Storm episodes identified as a risk factor. Nine storm events tracked between 2012 and document date showed contamination decreasing over time, with bacterial values conforming 24 hours post-storm. Three beaches identified as more sensitive to storm contamination: Champigny, Marettes, and Romaniquette. Sources of contamination during storms include wastewater treatment plant malfunctions and overflow. Average E. coli 115 UFC/100ml and enterococci 79 UFC/100ml recorded 24 hours after storms. Beach closure for 24 hours recommended after storms or significant rainfall (10mm/24h).
