Water

Coastal and transitional lagoon water body. Etang de Berre has a sandy and rocky shoreline with varying depths. Individual beach profiles indicate lengths ranging from approximately 679 metres, with average widths of 5 metres. The lagoon has moderate to high anthropogenic influence depending on location.

Etang de Berre, France. Multiple beaches identified including Robinsons (Rognac), Champigny, Marettes, and Romaniquette. The lagoon is fed by natural tributaries including the Arc, Touloubre, and Cadière rivers.

May to September monitoring priority period. Bathing season calendar established annually before season start.

Water Quality

Water quality classification system uses four categories: insufficient, sufficient, good, and excellent. Regulatory thresholds for coastal and transitional waters apply: Excellent (Enterococci ≤100 UFC/100ml at 95th percentile, E. coli ≤250 UFC/100ml); Good (Enterococci ≤200 UFC/100ml, E. coli ≤500 UFC/100ml); Sufficient (Enterococci ≤185 UFC/100ml at 90th percentile, E. coli ≤500 UFC/100ml). Robinsons beach (Rognac) was classified as Excellent in 2024, Good in 2021, and Excellent in 2022 and 2023. Monitoring conducted annually with minimum 4 samples per season.

Risks

Storm events and heavy rainfall (≥10mm/24h) identified as risk factors, with 24-hour beach closures recommended post-event. Three beaches (Champigny, Marettes, Romaniquette) show elevated sensitivity to storm-related contamination. Nine historical storm episodes tracked between 2012 and present, with bacterial levels conforming to standards 24 hours post-event. Average E. coli measured at 115 UFC/100ml and enterococci at 79 UFC/100ml 24 hours after storms. Multiple wastewater treatment stations on watershed tributaries identified as potential contamination sources, particularly the Arc discharge near Champigny beach. Potential for cyanobacteria and macroalgae proliferation assessed.
