Lagoa is an urban beach forming a small bay in Póvoa de Varzim, integrating the beach fronts of Lagoa, Pontes, and Fragosinho. During low tide, several rocky outcrops emerge and become temporary islets, creating rocky pools suitable for bathing. The beach is popular during the bathing season and is known for surf and bodyboard activities.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Bathing was advised against or prohibited for 2 days during the 2024 bathing season due to short-term pollution events. Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to contamination of the rainwater network. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination, mainly from rainwater network contamination.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to rainwater network contamination causing faecal contamination. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with a history of bloom occurrences. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no history of occurrences.
