Fragosa is an urban beach located in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim. The beach features a small rocky islet resembling camel humps. During low tide, numerous small lagoons form on the sand strip.

Season

14 June to 14 September 2025. Sampling frequency: weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). The beach experienced no days of bathing prohibition or advisories due to short-term pollution events during the 2024 bathing season. Faecal contamination may originate mainly from the Esteiro river, particularly during heavy rainfall when excessive tributary flow can transport microbiological load.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow of the tributary during precipitation events, leading to entrainment of microbiological load. Potential for cyanobacteria blooms is moderate with historical occurrence. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential are both low with no historical occurrence.
