Zona Urbana Sul I is an urban beach with intensive use located in Póvoa de Varzim. It comprises three beach fronts: Carvalhido, Salgueira, and Azul. The beach features an extensive sandy strip bordered by an urban sidewalk. It is part of the Ave River basin.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified under Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No days of bathing being advised against or prohibited occurred due to short-term pollution events in the 2024 bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from the rain water network.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to contamination of the rain water network. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no historical occurrence.
