Two bathing water profiles of type 2 covering Le Palandrin beach in Pénestin and Pont Mahé beach in Assérac. These beaches are located in coastal areas of northwestern France and are subject to contamination risks from coastal water courses and occasional pollution episodes. The profiles identify pollution sources, assess water quality monitoring results, and propose management measures to protect public health.

Water

Coastal bathing areas. Le Palandrin is situated approximately 15 metres from open water and approximately 1280 metres from the shoreline reference point. Pont Mahé is situated approximately 20 to 30 metres from open water and approximately 2150 metres from the shoreline reference point.

Location

Le Palandrin beach is located in Pénestin, Morbihan, Brittany. Pont Mahé beach is located in Assérac, Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire. Le Palandrin has an average daily attendance of 50 people during the bathing season. Pont Mahé has an average daily attendance of 100 people during the bathing season.

Season

15 June to 15 September for both beaches. No official surveillance monitoring was in place at the time of profile development.

Water Quality

Under Directive 76/160/CEE, Le Palandrin was classified as quality class B (average water quality) in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Pont Mahé was classified as quality class B in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Under Directive 2006/7/CE, Le Palandrin had insufficient data for classification. Pont Mahé was classified as good quality for 2004-2008 and 2006-2009, and as sufficient quality for 2007-2010. Pollution episodes occurred on 22 July 2010, 19 August 2009, and 19 August 2008, attributed to rainfall and bacteriological contamination. Pont Mahé experiences very strong contamination episodes periodically.

Risks

Coastal water courses present medium to high impact risks. Wastewater system malfunctions and accidental overflows from sewage pumping stations pose risks, with high impact if overflows reach the beach. Domestic animals present low to medium risks. Wild animals present low risks.
