Plages des Ailes and Remember are open ocean beaches located in Mimizan, a commune in the Landes department of Aquitaine, France. The beaches are situated on the Atlantic coastline and are protected by a dune barrier. These bathing zones are part of five declared bathing water areas in Mimizan that are monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. The beaches experience a temperate oceanic climate with moderate rainfall and are dominated by westerly winds that influence water circulation and pollutant transport.

Open ocean beach on the Atlantic coastline, protected by a dune barrier. The beach is subject to strong Atlantic swell, particularly in autumn and winter, generated by depressions carried by the Gulf Stream. Water circulation is influenced by general circulation patterns, wind, tides, swell, and river discharge.

Location

Mimizan, Landes department, Aquitaine region, France. Located at coordinates 44° 12' 4" North, 1° 13' 60" West. The town is situated approximately 49 km southwest of Teste-de-Buch and is close to the Landes de Gascogne regional natural park, approximately 25 km away.

Water Quality

Monitoring is conducted according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. A sampling point is defined for the bathing zone. Meteorological factors influence the appearance and fate of pollutants, with rainfall affecting pollutant occurrence and wind affecting their transport and dilution in the marine environment.

Risks

Strong Atlantic swell occurs principally in autumn and winter, generating powerful waves responsible for coastal erosion dynamics. In conditions without waves, westerly and north-westerly winds tend to drive pollution toward coastal bathing zones. Violent winds (>100 km/h) occur 2 to 4 times per year, generally from October to March.
