Levante Torrente Rexello is a bathing water area located at the mouth of the Rexello stream in Genoa, Liguria. The beach is typically pebbly and bounded by artificial structures, situated between the Multedo oil port and the Prà port. Free public beach is available on the western side, with private bathing establishments and related services, accommodation facilities, and restaurants on the eastern side. The area is characterized by strong urbanization with tourist-residential character and significant industrial activity.

Water

Location

Pegli area, Genoa, Liguria. Located between the Multedo oil port and the Prà port. The seafront promenade, state highway SS1, the railway station, and Villa Pallavicini are located inland. Beach area extends 0.173 km.

Facilities

Free public beach with private bathing establishments on the eastern side. Private establishments provide related services, accommodation facilities, and restaurants. Sports facilities include US San Marziano, sports clubs (Rari Nantes, Vela Latina, Tennis Pegli), Verde Cross, bowling fields, and AMT ferry dock offering local shuttle service.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for the 2019-2022 period: Sufficient. Water has been monitored since the 2020 season. Intensified monitoring frequency applied for the 2023 season due to the sufficient classification status. The Ligurian Sea is not characterized by cyanobacterial blooms due to predominantly oligotrophic conditions. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has been observed in the region over the past decade; reference station CREV at Genova Voltri recorded exceeding the limit of 30,000 cells/litre in July 2022, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in August 2018 and July 2022.

Risks

Port-origin pollution present due to proximity to Multedo oil port to the east and Prà port to the west. Two wastewater treatment plants (Pegli and Sestri P.) discharge pipes pass through the area; discharges occur at distances of approximately 2.8 km and 4 km from the beach respectively. During heavy precipitation, increased stream flow from the Rexello stream at the boundary may transport effluents downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms can cause temporary and reversible respiratory irritation and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
