Multedo Beach is a predominantly pebble beach located in Genoa, Italy, between Molo Archetti to the west and Molo Multedo to the east, at the entrance to the Multedo Oil Port. The beach is unequipped and free to access, situated in a heavily urbanised context with strong port and industrial activities. The surrounding area includes sports facilities, a rowing club, and ferry services.

Water

Coastal water body covering 0.263 km². The Torrente Varenna and Rio Rostan watercourses flow directly into the bathing water.

Location

Genoa, Liguria province, Italy. The beach is positioned between Molo Archetti (west) and Molo Multedo (east), near the entrance to Genova Multedo Oil Port. Ferry services are available from the Molo Torre dock.

Facilities

Unequipped free beach with tourist services and food and beverage facilities. Nearby sports clubs include A.S.D Multedo, Pertini football field, and Esperia rowing club.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2019–2022: Good. The Ligurian Sea is characterised by oligotrophic conditions, preventing cyanobacteria blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has been documented in the region over the past decade. A reference station at CREV in Genova Voltri recorded an exceedance of the 30,000 cells/litre limit in July 2022, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in August 2018 and July 2022. Pollution sources include port activities at Genova Multedo Oil Port (approximately 0.8 km south-east) and Genova Prà Port (approximately 1.1 km west). The Pegli wastewater treatment plant discharges approximately 2.6 km offshore via the main outfall; an emergency outfall discharges approximately 0.3 km inside the port breakwater.

Risks

Pollution of port origin. During heavy rainfall, increased watercourse discharge may transport effluent downstream from the Torrente Varenna and Rio Rostan into the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms can cause temporary and reversible respiratory effects and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
