Pegli waterfront is a bathing beach located in front of the seafront promenade in the Pegli area of Genoa, situated in a port zone and delimited by artificial structures with perpendicular groynes. The beach is in a strongly urbanised context with tourist and residential character and significant industrial activity. The area is bounded by the Genoa Multedo Oil Port and the Genoa Prà port.

Water

Coastal waters. Area: 0.706 km². The bathing area is located in an open seawater zone between the Genoa Multedo Oil Port and the Genoa Prà port. The Castello stream estuary borders the eastern boundary of the bathing water.

Location

Pegli, Genoa, Liguria region, Italy. The beach is adjacent to the Genoa Pegli seafront promenade. The area is accessible by AMT ferry service from the ferry dock located east of the bathing area. A railway station and Villa Pallavicini (botanical garden and archaeological museum) are located inland. State road SS1 runs inland from the beach.

Facilities

Private bathing establishments with services and numerous local food and beverage facilities. Sports clubs: Rari Nantes, Vela Latina, Tennis Club, Unione Sportiva San Marziano, and bocce courts. Croce Verde di Pegli (medical facility).

Monitoring programme for 2025 season with intensified frequency.

Water Quality

Classification for 2021–2024: Sufficient. Intensified monitoring frequency is applied for the 2025 season due to the sufficient classification. The area is subject to pollution from urban and industrial sources, as well as port-related pollution from the Genoa Multedo and Genoa Prà oil ports. The Pegli wastewater treatment plant discharge pipes are located approximately 360 m east of the beach, outside the bathing water, with main discharge approximately 2.8 km and secondary discharge approximately 0.3 km offshore.

Risks

Pollution sources include urban and industrial activities in a strongly urbanised context. Port-related pollution from oil ports. Short-duration pollution events may occur when upstream critical conditions and precipitation increase torrent flow, potentially transporting effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been documented in the monitoring area; exceedances of 30,000 cells/litre were recorded in July 2022 and 2023 at the reference monitoring station. Inhalation of aerosolised toxins from Ostreopsis ovata causes temporary and reversible respiratory tract irritation and possible fever in sensitive individuals.
