Coastal marine water body. Area: 0.867 km. The site is influenced by the Ofanto River basin, which includes the main Ofanto river course and tributaries Marana Capacciotti and Torrente Locone. The Ofanto has a markedly torrential regime with significant flooding in autumn and winter due to precipitation and very low water in summer.

Location

Margherita di Savoia, Barletta-Andria-Trani province, Apulia region, Italy. The water body is called Margherita di Savoia-Barletta.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017-2020). The area is predominantly agricultural. Potential point pollution sources include a treatment plant with discharges from civil and productive settlements discharged into the sea, and the mouth of the Ofanto River to the south.

Risks

Potential impacts from a submarine pipeline carrying treated urban wastewater and from the Ofanto River mouth. No short-term pollution events were recorded in the past four years. The area is not characterized by algal or cyanobacteria blooms. No cases of potentially toxic algal proliferation have been detected.
