Lille Sandkås

Lille Sandkås is a sandy bathing beach located at Sandkås northwest of Tejn. The beach covers approximately 700 metres and transitions quickly from sand to a rocky bottom. It is divided by rock outcrops into a smaller northern section and a larger southern section. Water depth increases rapidly from the shoreline. A bathing pier is present at the northern end of the beach.

Location

The beach is located at Sandkås northwest of Tejn. Access is from Tejnvej via Gilbertstræde. A small public car park and public toilets are available adjacent to the beach. A summer kiosk operates at the site.

Public car park, public toilets, summer kiosk, bathing pier at the northern end, rescue posts R 090 and R 092.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2016–2019. Monitoring data from multiple years show good water quality. A potential pollution source is an emergency overflow from a sewage pumping station that discharges only during power failure or other emergencies. The nearby Tejn Treatment Plant is a modern biological and chemical facility serving several communities. If beach contamination risk occurs, warning signs will be posted.

Risks

Blue-green algae blooms occur naturally in the Baltic Sea around Bornholm during warm periods in July and August, particularly in sunny and calm conditions. Algae can produce toxic substances and should not be ingested; bathing of small children and dogs in areas with high algae concentration is not recommended. Seaweed and macroalgae may periodically accumulate on the beach. Bathing is not advised during strong onshore winds.
