Tejn Havn, Isværket is a bathing area located on the east coast of Bornholm, facing the Baltic Sea. The bathing site consists of a bathing pier approximately 120 metres long and 2 metres wide, established over broken rock pieces at the edge of an artificial lagoon, with a sandy beach in one corner measuring 7 metres long and 1–8 metres wide. The area features facilities including a fireplace, changing rooms, sauna, and wilderness bath. The bathing station was designated in 2020 and has not yet been classified.

Water

Baltic Sea (Østersøen). The seabed is sandy. Water depth in the lagoon is estimated to approximately 2 metres. Salinity is stable at 7–8 ‰. Water currents are variable in direction but predominantly still.

Location

Tejn, Bornholm, Denmark. The bathing area is located in extension of Tejn Havn, where public parking spaces are available.

Facilities

Bathing pier, changing rooms, sauna, wilderness bath, fireplace. These facilities are privately owned and may incur user fees.

Season

1 June to 1 September (official monitoring period).

Water Quality

The bathing station is newly designated as of 2020 and awaits classification. Classification will be assigned once 16 water samples have been reported to the EU. Six bathing water samples are collected annually and analysed for E. coli and enterococci bacteria. Control samples have shown minor, short-lived faecal contamination with slightly degraded water quality. The municipality will issue warning signs if information about pollution affecting water quality or bathers' health is received.

Risks

Two combined sewer overflows exist within 200 metres of the bathing water, one of which is in the harbour basin. One storm water overflow and one combined sewer overflow are located approximately 300 metres east. One storm water overflow is located approximately 300 metres northwest. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms occur annually in the Baltic Sea around Bornholm, particularly in July–August during warm, sunny, calm periods, potentially causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation can occur and may harbour bacteria. Sudden contamination can result from accidents involving pleasure boats or sewage pipes.
