Sandvig is a sandy beach located in Osand Bay between Sandvig and Hammeren, covering approximately 400 metres. The sand transitions quickly to a rocky bottom, and water depth increases rapidly from the shoreline outward. A bathing jetty is located at the southern end of the beach. Bathing is not recommended during strong onshore winds.

Location

Sandvig, Bornholm. Access via Langebjergvej from Jernbanegade, Hammershusvej, Bredgade, and Sandlinien. Public parking and toilets are available adjacent to the beach.

Public toilets, wooden/concrete promenade deck, beach volleyball court, playground equipment, seating platforms, enclosed changing area, rescue station (rescue number R 070), restaurants and shops in Sandvig.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'excellent' based on 2016–2019 data. Multiple years of monitoring data from the municipal control station show good water quality at Sandvig. The nearest potential pollution source is an emergency overflow from a sewage pumping station serving parts of Sandvig; this overflow only functions during power failures or emergencies. Tejn Treatment Plant is a modern biological and chemical facility treating wastewater from Sandvig, Allinge, Sandkås, Tejn, Olsker, and Rø. Discharge occurs into Ålebæk watercourse, which flows between Sandkås Beach and Tejn.

Risks

Blue-green algae (Nodosaria spumigena, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae) bloom annually in the Baltic Sea around Bornholm, typically in July–August during warm, calm, sunny periods. Algae can accumulate in thick masses along exposed coastlines. Algae can produce toxic substances; ingestion should be avoided. Young children and dogs should not bathe where algae concentrations are high. Periodic accumulations of seaweed and other macroalgae may occur on the beach, causing seaweed smell and aesthetic issues.
