Lindholm Strandpark

Lindholm Strandpark is a bathing area covering approximately 8 hectares on the north side of Limfjorden in Nørresundby. The beach has fine sand mixed with fine-grained material and stretches 400 meters around the bay. The area is shallow with low water exchange. Water samples are collected during the bathing season and analysed for E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria to assess fecal contamination.

Water

Bay in Limfjorden. Beach length 400 meters around the bay. Beach width 2–7 meters. Shallow water. Fine-grained material and sand on the seabed. Salinity typically 22–30 ‰. Water exchange is poor with predominantly still currents.

Location

Located on the north side of Limfjorden in Nørresundby, approximately 0.5 kilometers west of Nørresundby city centre. Parking and facilities are available at the site.

Lifeguards, life jackets, waste bins, toilet building.

Season

Bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Water samples are analysed for E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria. Classification is calculated using bacterial concentration data from the last four years.

Risks

Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation at the beach edge; bathing near large amounts of seaweed is not recommended due to potential toxin production and protection of disease-causing bacteria. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms in Limfjorden, which can cause skin irritation and poisoning if water containing algae is swallowed. Risk of phytoplankton blooms due to relatively high nutrient content in the fjord. Bathing in unclear water is not recommended. Possible pollution sources include Lindholm Stream, two marinas, and rain-dependent discharges.
