Østre Havn is a bathing water station located in a central harbour basin in Aalborg that was newly established as a recreational public space. The harbour basin features high quay walls where cycling and walking are possible along the entire quay edge, with multiple ladders at various points allowing access to and from the water. Water samples are collected during the bathing season and analysed for two indicator bacteria: E. coli and intestinal enterococci, which indicate potential faecal contamination.

Water

Østre Havn is a harbour basin located in Limfjorden. Water depth ranges from 4 to 5 metres. The seabed is expected to be silted. Typical salinity in Limfjorden is 22–30 ‰. Strong currents may occur in Limfjorden, but within the harbour area strong currents are not expected.

Location

Østre Havn is centrally located in Aalborg, Denmark. The area is situated as part of the Aalborg Waterfront development, adjacent to Nordkraft and Musikkens Hus. The harbour basin features high quay walls with walkways and cycling paths.

Facilities

The harbour basin has high quay walls suitable for cycling and walking along the entire quay edge. Multiple ladders are positioned at various points on the quay wall to allow water access. Aalborg Cable Park is located in the area.

Bathing water samples are collected during the bathing season.

Water Quality

The bathing water at Østre Havn has not yet been classified, as it is a newly established bathing water station. Classification is calculated based on data from the last four years of bathing water analyses. Water samples are tested during the bathing season for E. coli and intestinal enterococci. Possible pollution sources include rainfall-dependent discharges from overflow structures and surface water runoff from sealed areas. Aalborg Kloak A/S is responsible for wastewater management.

Risks

Overflow structures on the eastern side of Østre Havn may cause discharge during heavy rainfall, particularly when Limfjorden currents flow westward; bathing is not recommended for up to three days following such events. Macroalgae (seaweed) may occur at the water's edge; bathing near large accumulations of seaweed is not recommended due to potential toxin formation and protection of pathogenic bacteria from UV radiation. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms exists in Limfjorden, which can cause skin irritation, rashes, and poisoning if contaminated water is ingested. Risk of phytoplankton blooms exists due to relatively high nutrient content; bathing in turbid water is generally not recommended. Glass, debris, chemical contamination including oil spills may occasionally occur.
