Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Piazze is a natural lake located at 1,021 metres altitude in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The lake sits in an elliptical basin at the foot of Monte Costalta and was formed by moraine deposits. It was substantially modified between 1922 and 1925 with the construction of a 150-metre porphyry dam and dredging to increase capacity. The bathing area comprises a grassy zone in a natural setting approximately 200 metres long and 30 to 100 metres wide.

Water

Alpine lake with an area of 1.1 square kilometres. The lake sits at an altitude of 1,021 metres above sea level and is fed by the Fersina watershed.

Location

Bedollo, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. Parking is available at the site.

Facilities

Lifeguard surveillance and rescue service with observation tower and emergency equipment. Toilets, children's playground, bar, restaurant, hotel, parking, and camping facilities. A dog beach (Bau-beach) is located at the Cercenadi beach approximately midway along the left shore between the Pineta hotel and the Alla Spiaggia bar.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent for 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Nitrate concentrations are well below vulnerability thresholds, with spring turnover measurements in 2009 showing nitric nitrogen at 0.4 mg/l N-NO3 and total phosphorus below 10 µg/l. No point-source pollution elements were detected. No short-duration pollution events were identified.

Risks

On 15 August 2010, a debris flow of approximately 35,000 cubic metres from Monte Costalta affected the adjacent Serraia lake, carrying mud, organic matter, and phosphorus into the water. The Piazze lake was not primarily impacted by this event. The lake is not included in the seasonal algal monitoring plan as it has not been affected by documented algal blooms in recent years. No toxic algal events have been reported.
