Spiaggia Sud

Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Spiaggia Sud is a sandy and pebbly beach on Lake Piazze in the Trentino Alto Adige region. The beach has a gentle slope and measures approximately 120 metres in length and 40 metres in width. The lake sits at an altitude of 1021 metres above sea level in a glacial basin at the foot of Monte Costalta. The lake's current form dates from 1922–1925 when a 150-metre porphyry dam was constructed and the basin was deepened and cleaned.

Water

Lake Piazze is a glacial lake with a surface area of 1.7 square kilometres, situated at 1021 metres above sea level. The lake has an elliptical basin. In spring 2009, nitric nitrogen concentration was 0.4 mg/l N-NO3 and total phosphorus concentration was less than 10 µg/l.

Facilities

Lifeguard surveillance and rescue service on public beach with an observation tower and emergency equipment. Accommodation facilities with services available. Animals are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as EXCELLENT for the years 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. No pollution episodes have been recorded since 2010. No direct discharges enter the lake; wastewater from nearby buildings is connected to a treatment plant at Tressilla that discharges purified water into the Silla stream below the lake.

Risks

A debris flow from Monte Costalta on 15 August 2010 deposited approximately 35,000 cubic metres of material, primarily affecting the adjacent Lake Serraia but with some mud, organic matter, and phosphorus transported into Lake Piazze waters.
