Hvidovre Strand is a bathing beach located in Lodsparken within Hvidovre Municipality, established in 2011. The beach is approximately 300 meters long with fine sand, and in 2017 was expanded southward by about 150 meters. Water depth reaches approximately 0.75 meters at 10 meters from the shore and 1 meter at 20 meters from the shore. The beach has excellent bathing water quality based on classification from the last four years of monitoring data.

Water

The bathing water is a coastal inlet in the Sound (Øresund). Water currents vary considerably throughout the swimming season, alternating between southerly and northerly directions due to whirlpools created by a harbor pier. The general current direction further from shore is northward. Water temperature in the 2021 season ranged from 14 to 27 degrees Celsius. The seabed consists of fine-grained sand.

Location

Hvidovre Strand is situated in Lodsparken in the eastern part of Hvidovre Municipality facing Kalveboderne. Access is available via Lodsvej and Strandhavevej. Parking for visitors is provided at Strandhavevej. The area is bordered to the south by Hvidovre Lystbådehavn and to the north by Mørtelrenden.

Season

Official monitoring occurs from June 1 to September 1.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Damhusåen/Harrestrup Å discharges approximately 800 meters north of the beach through a treatment plant located in Copenhagen Municipality. Combined sewer systems in the area have overflow structures that can release diluted wastewater and stormwater to Damhusåen and Kalveboderne during heavy rainfall. The contribution from Damhusåen is considered relatively low due to dilution before reaching the beach. The beach was constructed on previously landfilled seabed containing construction waste and soil fill with contamination from heavy hydrocarbons and PAHs; this contaminated soil was excavated and replaced with clean sand during expansion. Groundwater seeping out at the beach edge is monitored throughout the swimming season with no identified health risk. Sediment testing near the marina showed compliance with quality standards for toxic substances.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms is considered low, with no observations in the past five years of water sampling. Blooms may occur during prolonged warm periods with nutrient-rich water and can cause skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. Risk of large quantities of macroalgae washing up is low. Temporary fecal contamination can occur following heavy rainfall from combined sewer overflows and may persist for up to three days after rainfall ceases. TBT residue may remain in sediment from historical boat paint use, though risk from the nearby marina is considered small.
