Byskoven Badezone

Byskoven Badezone is an unmanned bathing zone located along Kalveboddiget by the emerging Byskoven forest in Copenhagen. The bathing area is defined exclusively by the space between bathing pontoons, which are bordered by floating bridges with wooden decks and rope barriers. The water is saltwater with weak to strong currents, predominantly from northern and southern directions. Bathing occurs at the visitor's own risk as there is no lifeguard supervision, though rescue ladders are available. The zone is open for swimming year-round.

Water

Location

Located along Kalveboddiget by the upcoming Byskoven forest in Copenhagen. Toilets and cold-water showers are situated approximately 150 metres north of the bathing zone. Copenhagen Municipality, Technical and Environmental Administration, Njalsgade 13, 1st floor, Postboks 449, 1505 Copenhagen V.

Facilities

Unmanned bathing zone. Toilets and cold-water showers located approximately 150 metres north. Rescue ladders available. Disabled access: handicap-accessible ramp providing access to the dyke crown and floating bridges; sloped bathing steps with handrails for increased accessibility, though full wheelchair access is not available. Red warning light connected to the bathing water warning system alerts to poor water quality.

Season

The bathing zone is open for swimming year-round. Official monitoring occurs year-round with at least 20 samples taken per year. The bathing season section of the profile is revised annually before the start of the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent in 2023 and 2022 (DKBW 1908). Monitoring is conducted at least 20 times per year. Risk of blue-green algae, phytoplankton growth, and macroalgae is assessed as low. The zone was closed for 115 hours during the 2023 bathing season (3.4% of the time) indicated by a red flag system. Possible fecal pollution sources include overflow structures to Copenhagen Harbour; during periods of intensive rainfall, discharge from these structures may result in bacterial contamination. No other known pollution sources are identified in the bathing water profile area.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algae, phytoplankton growth, and macroalgae is assessed as low. During periods of intensive rainfall, bacterial contamination from overflow structures is possible. Glass fragments, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occasionally occur.
