Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Sølystparken is a small public park located on the northern shore of Silkeborg Langsø lake in the western part of the central basin. The bathing water is classified as excellent based on four years of data. The lake is shallow with a maximum depth of approximately 4 metres in the central basin. Two smaller sandy areas exist on the lake shore and bottom, while most of the lake bed is muddy with reeds growing in shallow water on both sides of the bathing area.

Water

Lake (Silkeborg Langsø). Total area 2.18 km². Length 6,534 metres. Divided into three basins: west basin (0.44 km²), central basin (0.83 km²), and east basin (0.91 km²). Maximum depth in central basin approximately 4 metres. Depth at the end of the piers is 1–2 metres. Water retention time in central basin averages 0.05 years. Water flow direction predominantly easterly. Primary water inflow from Lyså river, fed by Funder Å system through Ørnsø lake.

Location

Silkeborg Langsø lake, located in the heart of Silkeborg city. Sølystparken is situated on the northern shore of the central basin in the western end. Access is from Sølystvej. Søsportens Hus is located in the western end of the park.

Facilities

Large pier facility at Søsportens Hus. Smaller pier east of Søsportens Hus. Both piers can be used for bathing but are also used as vessel launching sites, requiring caution from swimmers.

Season

Bathing season runs 1 June to 31 August, during which water quality samples are collected.

Water Quality

Water classified as excellent based on monitoring data from the last four years. Classification based on faecal bacteria content only; algae content not included in classification. Monitoring has shown no elevated faecal bacteria levels for several years. Receives large quantities of nutrients from Lyså/Funder Å, causing significant algae growth and cloudy water in summer.

Risks

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms occur periodically and can produce toxins potentially fatal in severe cases. Other phytoplankton blooms also occur with varying frequency; while typically non-toxic, severe growth can cause very high pH levels potentially causing discomfort to swimmers. Chemical pollution possible if tanker vehicles or industrial accidents occur near roads close to the lake, but risk is limited. Combined sewer overflows downstream of the bathing area discharge untreated diluted wastewater during heavy or prolonged rain, though impact on water quality at the bathing site is limited. Diving from the clubhouse terrace is prohibited due to shallow water depth posing injury risk.
