Water

Silkeborg Langsø is a shallow lake 6,534 metres long with a total area of approximately 2.18 km². The central basin (midtbassin) covers 0.83 km² and has a maximum depth of approximately 4 metres. The lake consists of three basins: a western basin (0.44 km²), central basin (0.83 km²), and eastern basin (0.91 km²). Water flow is predominantly eastward. The average water retention time in the central basin is approximately 0.05 years. The lake bed is primarily muddy with reed growth in shallow areas.

Location

Sølystparken, located on the northern shore of Silkeborg Langsø in the western part of the central basin. Access is via Sølystvej. The bathing spot is in the heart of Silkeborg city, near Søsportens Hus. Parking information is not specified.

Facilities

Two bathing piers are available (one large pier at Søsportens Hus and one smaller pier to the east). Information signs are posted at the bathing spot regarding water quality risks. Additional facilities information is not specified.

Water Quality

The bathing water at Sølystparken is classified as excellent, based on data from the last four years. Classification is determined solely by faecal bacteria content. Water quality monitoring has shown no elevated faecal bacteria content for several years. However, the central basin receives large quantities of nutrients from the Lyså river system, resulting in significant algal growth, particularly during summer.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms occur periodically and can produce toxins that may be fatal. Other phytoplankton blooms also occur with varying frequency; while typically non-toxic, they can raise water pH to high levels and cause discomfort. Chemical contamination is possible but considered limited, occurring only in the case of accidents involving tanker vehicles or industrial facilities near the lake. Combined sewer overflows occur downstream of Sølystparken during heavy or prolonged rainfall, with limited impact on bathing water quality. Swimming is not recommended immediately after heavy or prolonged rain, or when algae is visibly present.
