Lystrup Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Lystrup Strand is a 1.4 km long and 10 m wide beach located in the northwestern part of Norddjurs Municipality in Denmark. The beach is predominantly stony with small and large rocks, though the eastern end has some sandy sections. The beach has been classified as having excellent water quality based on regular monitoring of E. coli and enterococci over a four-year period. The seabed is sandy with some gravel and stones, and reaches 2 meters depth approximately 350–400 meters from the shoreline.

Water

Coastal water body in Kattegat. The beach extends 1.4 km with a width of approximately 10 meters. The seabed is sandy with some gravel and stones. Water temperature varies between 10°C and 22°C during the bathing season. Salinity is salt water. Distance to 2 meters depth is approximately 350–400 meters from the shoreline.

Location

Lystrup Strand, Strandvejen, 8961 Allingåbro, in Norddjurs Municipality, Denmark. Access to the beach is available at several points along Strandvejen via small paths. Three larger parking areas and one smaller parking area are located along Strandvejen near the beach.

Facilities

Three larger parking areas and one smaller parking area. Tables and benches along the beach. Rescue stations positioned along the beach. Toilet and dry toilet facilities at two of the parking areas. The road along the beach is part of 'Nordsøruten' cycling route.

Season

Bathing season is from April to September. Dogs must be kept on a leash from 1 April to 30 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is Excellent, the best possible classification. Classification is based on regular monitoring samples analysed for E. coli and enterococci from the preceding four-year period. Bacterial concentrations are low and relatively stable during 2009–2012. The highest recorded E. coli value was measured in August 2010.

Risks

Low risk of fecal pollution from the summer house area and dispersed settlements. Low risk of blue-green algal blooms due to high salinity preventing optimal growth conditions. Relatively high risk of larger seaweed deposits washing ashore due to nutrient loading in Hevring Bay and favourable growth conditions in shallow coastal areas. Risk of mass blooms of other microscopic algae during bathing season. Low risk of oxygen depletion due to shallow water depth and current conditions. Low risk of chemical pollution from shipping accidents. Recurring phenomenon of pollen accumulation may locally affect water quality. Low risk of short-term pollution from boat toilet tank emptying.
