St. Sjørup Strand is a bathing beach approximately 1.3 kilometres long and 100 metres wide located in the northwestern part of Norddjurs Municipality. The beach features a sandy bottom with a gradual slope: access from the shoreline to 2 metres depth extends approximately 100 metres. Before reaching the main bathing area with sand ridges, visitors must pass through a shallow meadow area and a wading zone that may be wet or dry depending on tidal conditions. The water is saline, and temperature varies between 10°C and 24°C during the bathing season.

Location

St. Sjørup Strand is located in the northwestern end of Norddjurs Municipality. GPS reference point: Estruplundvej, 8950 Ørsted. Parking is available at the beach access road at the northern end, with signage at Estruplundvej via Kærvejen. Additional access to the beach is available through several private roads in the summer house area.

Large parking area at beach access road; shelter area near parking; tables and benches along the beach; rescue stations; toilet at parking area; walking path along the water in the shallow meadow area.

Season

Official monitoring occurs year-round; water temperature suitable for bathing between approximately May and September (10°C to 24°C range noted for bathing season).

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is based on regular control samples taken over the preceding 4-year period, with analyses of E. coli and enterococci included in calculations. Measured bacterial concentrations are low.

Risks

Algae: cyanobacteria risk is very low due to high salinity; risk of other microscopic algae blooms is small; seaweed accumulation risk is relatively high with frequent large quantities capable of washing ashore. Fecal contamination: higher risk from the northern part of the summer house area due to septic tank systems with high groundwater affecting drainage ditches; lower risk from southern summer house area and St. Sjørup town as wastewater is pumped to treatment facilities. Chemical pollution risk from maritime accidents is low. Oxygen depletion risk is low. Pollen accumulation is a recurring phenomenon that can locally cause poor bathing water quality. Pacific oysters are not present. Boat toilet tank emptying poses low risk.
