Skovgårde Strand is a bathing beach located in the northern part of Norddjurs Municipality, extending approximately 1.7 kilometres and 20 metres wide. The beach is situated in the eastern part of Kattegat with surface water currents flowing from east to west. The bathing water has been classified as excellent quality, representing the best possible water quality rating. The beach is backed by a summer house area with two camping sites, Dalgård Camping and FDM Camping, located approximately 80 to 100 metres from the shore.

Water

Saltwater beach in Kattegat. The beach is 1.7 kilometres long and 20 metres wide. The distance from the shoreline to 2 metres depth is approximately 120 metres. Water temperature varies between 12°C and 20°C during the bathing season. The prevailing surface water current direction is from east to west.

Location

Skovgårde Strand is located in the northern end of Norddjurs Municipality adjacent to Fjellerup Strand. GPS orientation point: Skipperholmen, 8961 Allingåbro. Parking is available at the Daugårdsvej car park, approximately 300 metres from the beach, with signage marking the beach and parking location. Direct vehicle access to the beach is not possible.

Large car park at Daugårdsvej; tables and benches at the beach; rescue posts along the beach; toilet at car park; Dalgård Camping approximately 300 metres from the beach; FDM Camping approximately 20 metres from the beach.

Season

Monitoring data covers the bathing season period. Dogs must be kept on a leash from 1 April to 30 September.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification is excellent quality, the highest possible rating. Water quality assessment is based on regular control samples collected over a four-year period, analysing E. coli and enterococci. Bacterial concentrations from two monitoring stations were low and stable during 2009–2012.

Risks

High risk of beached seaweed and algae accumulation due to nutrient loading from Randers Fjord. Pollen accumulation may occur seasonally in spring and early summer. Low risk of blue-green algae blooms due to high salinity. Low risk of oxygen depletion due to shallow water depth and current conditions. Low risk of chemical pollution from shipping accidents. Low risk of faecal pollution from septic tanks with regular emptying and functioning infiltration systems. Low risk of pollution from yacht toilet tank discharge.
