Valadares Norte is an urban beach located in Vila Nova de Gaia with an extensive sand strip bordered by a line of dunes. The beach has both sandy and rocky morphology. It is situated within the Douro River basin.

Season

14 June to 14 September 2025. Sampling frequency: every 3 weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from the local sanitation network and the Valadares tributary. Short-term pollution events are unlikely but may occur due to excessive surface water flow during rainfall or malfunctions in the wastewater lifting station.

Risks

Moderate potential for cyanobacteria blooms with historical record of occurrence. Short-term pollution may occur due to excessive drainage flow during rainfall or wastewater lifting station malfunctions, leading to microbiological contamination.
