Möhnesee is an artificial reservoir (dam lake) with a surface area of 1037 hectares. The water body has a catchment area of 100–1000 km². Average depth is 12.54 metres with a maximum depth of 33.7 metres. The substrate is sandy with a modified shoreline structure. Water temperature ranges from 16 to 26 degrees Celsius. Transparency averages 2.5 metres (range 1.4–3.6 metres). The water is stratified and has a water exchange time of 30 days or less. Geology of the surrounding area is calcareous. Water level fluctuations reach 3 metres.

The bathing water is located at Strandbad Delecke on Möhnesee near the town of Möhnesee in the Soest district. The nearest city is Soest. UTM coordinates are E: 436242 N: 5704792.

Water Quality

The bathing water has been classified as excellent in each of the four most recent years (2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023). Water quality monitoring indicates no current relevant pollution sources. Historical sediment contamination includes PFT (perfluorinated compound) contamination detected in the Möhne River in 2006. No cyanobacterial algal blooms have been observed in the past four years. The risk of future cyanobacterial blooms is assessed as low. No macroalgae or phytoplankton blooms have been observed.

Risks

No zercariae (parasites causing swimmer's itch) have been identified. No relevant threat from cyanobacteria blooms, macroalgae, or phytoplankton is present. Bird populations on the water are rare with no identified impact.
