Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

The Molo bathing area is a free-access pebble beach located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in the centre of Ranco. The beach has a width of 7 metres and is situated at an altitude of 195 metres above sea level. An adjacent public park provides recreational facilities including playgrounds, viewpoints, and sports equipment. The water quality has been classified as excellent for the period 2019–2022, with no bathing bans in place.

Water

Lake Maggiore, a lake water body. The bathing area covers 0.050 km² and is situated at 195 metres above sea level. The area is part of the Ticino River basin.

Location

Ranco, Varese Province, Lombardy Region, on the south-eastern shore of Lake Maggiore. Several car parks are available. The competent authority is the Municipality of Ranco (telephone 0331 976619).

Facilities

Car parks, toilets, bar, restaurants, accommodation facilities, drinking water fountain. Dogs are permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2019–2022 reference period). No bathing bans are in place. Monitoring is conducted at the Pallanza buoy (CNR and ARPA) for pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, intestinal enterococci, and cyanobacteria. The wastewater treatment plant serving Ranco is located in Angera and complies with legal discharge limits. The SIMILE project monitors and manages the lake while allowing citizens to report water health information via an app.

Risks

Possible short-term pollution events from unfavourable meteorological conditions such as heavy rainfall, causing soil runoff, water accumulation, and accidental or unauthorised discharges of liquids or polluting debris. Seasonal algal blooms are possible, and cyanobacteria are identified as potentially toxic species in the phytoplankton. No anomalous events have been recorded. No toxic effects on swimmers or lake users or aquatic environments have been documented.
