Water Quality

Water quality classified as Good. Monitoring includes testing for faecal indicators E. coli and Enterococci. A wastewater treatment plant (Consortile di Via Libica, European code 19TP00G0022DE001) with capacity exceeding 50,000 serves the area, discharging treated effluent to sea via a 3 km outfall.

Risks

Mixed water overflow incidents from emergency overflow near an ecological island at Via Tunisi (coordinates 38.283° N, 12.5267° E). Potential for pump and pipeline failures causing occasional short-term pollution events over the past 4 years. Macroalgal and phytoplankton proliferation has occurred in the past 4 years but is not a designated ARPA Trapani monitoring point. No cyanobacterial proliferation risk identified.
