Tonnara Tipa is a sandy beach located in the historic centre of Trapani, Sicily, within an urban context. The beach has a width of 25 metres and experiences medium bathing visitor numbers during the summer season. It is classified as a coastal marine bathing water in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good. Monitoring includes testing for faecal indicators E. coli and Enterococci. A wastewater treatment plant (Consortile di Via Libica, class >50,000 inhabitants) discharges to the sea approximately 3 kilometres offshore.

Risks

Mixed sewage overflow incidents have occurred at an emergency spillway located near an ecological island on Via Tunisi. Potential unforeseen incidents include breakage of lifting pumps or related pipelines, and high-intensity rainfall events. Some macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation has been observed in the past 4 years, though the location is not part of regular ARPA Trapani monitoring points. No cyanobacterial proliferation risk has been identified.
