Bork Havn Nordstrand

Bork Havn Nordstrand is a 60-metre-long, fine sand beach located in the southeastern part of Ringkøbing Fjord near Bork Harbour. The beach is situated in picturesque surroundings with views towards the Tipperne bird reserve and is isolated from the harbour itself. Water depth increases gradually offshore, making the area particularly child-friendly.

Water

Brackish water in Ringkøbing Fjord. Beach up to 30 metres wide and 60 metres long. Fjord bottom consists of fine sand with scattered small stones. Water depth increases gradually; most of the fjord is shallower than 2 metres. Current direction measured 84 times during 2008–2010, predominantly from the northwest.

Location

Bork Havn, in the southeastern part of Ringkøbing Fjord. Accessed via Molen road leading to a large car park at the harbour.

Season

Bathing season (routine monitoring conducted during this period). Annual classification review in May before bathing season start.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Good. Classification based on routine monitoring for fecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) conducted during the bathing season over the preceding 4-year period. Classification reviewed annually before the bathing season. Potential sources of fecal pollution include two streams south of the beach (Kosig Kanal at 750 metres and Falen Å at 1,100 metres), which can contain high bacterial concentrations during rainfall due to diffuse surface water runoff. Minor drainage ditches north of the beach may also contain elevated fecal bacteria levels due to sewerage issues in rural areas. Sewerage improvements in summer house areas near Bork Harbour are ongoing.

Risks

Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Risk of temporary fecal contamination following heavy rainfall from discharge outlets of drainage ditches and combined sewer overflows. Possible contamination from Kosig Kanal discharge system during high groundwater levels and heavy prolonged rain. Risk of glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills. Macro-algae accumulation is low risk. Risk of sudden pollution from boat accidents, slurry tanks, and sewage pipes.
