Orø Nørrestænge

Orø Nørrestænge is a beach approximately 40 metres long in Holbæk Municipality, characterized as a beach meadow with a sandy bottom. The water is shallow and suitable for families with children, reaching 0.5 metres depth within about 50 metres and 2 metres depth at approximately 400 metres from shore. The beach is located near Orø Campingplads, surrounded by protected beach meadows and agricultural land. Dogs must be kept on a leash.

Water

Brackish water under normal conditions. Sandy bottom. Approximately 50 metres to reach 0.5 metres depth; approximately 400 metres to reach 2 metres depth. Current direction is variable but often from the south.

Location

Located in Holbæk Municipality, reached by driving from Nørrestængevej past Orø Campingplads. Parking is available at the beach with facilities for parking, trash bins, and information signage.

Lifeguard rescue ring, toilet, first aid kit, information board including bathing guidelines, drinking water, trash bins, parking.

Season

Monitoring is conducted during the bathing water season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent (based on data from 2020-2023). Monitoring is conducted during the bathing season using indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci to detect faecal contamination. Historical exceedances were attributed to sewage discharge from a drainage pipe between Orø Camping and Orøstrand residential and treatment facility; this area has since been connected to the municipal sewer system.

Risks

Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), macroalgae, and phytoplankton blooms. Bathing is not recommended if water is unclear and feet cannot be seen at knee depth. Swimmers should rinse with fresh water if this occurs. Children should not play or bathe near washed-up algae. Occasional contamination from glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
