Orø Strand

Orø Strand is a bathing beach with a slightly stony shore and primarily sandy bottom in deeper water. The beach reaches 0.5 metres depth at approximately 25 metres from shore, 0.75 metres depth at 60 metres, and approximately 2 metres depth at 150 metres. A small grass area of 10 by 5 metres is situated at the beach. The water is brackish under normal conditions.

Water

Brackish water body with sandy bottom. Water reaches 0.5 metres depth at 25 metres from shore, 0.75 metres depth at 60 metres from shore, and approximately 2 metres depth at 150 metres from shore. Current direction is variable but often comes from the south.

Location

The beach is accessed by parking at the parking area near Skole- og Behandlingshjemmet Orøstrand school. A path leads from the school down to the bathing beach but is unmarked. The site is used primarily by school overnight guests in connection with school camps and excursions.

Season

Monitoring samples are collected during the bathing water season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on data from 2020-2023). Monitoring is conducted during the bathing season with samples analysed for E. coli and enterococci bacteria. When exceedances have occurred, pollution is believed to originate from a drainage outlet located between Orø Camping and the school.

Risks

A drainage outlet between Orø Camping and Skole- og Behandlingshjemmet Orø Strand has been identified as a potential source of faecal pollution. Sewage was observed in the drainage in 2010 and 2011 from illegal emptying of septic tanks. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), macroalgae, and phytoplankton growth is low. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur. Swimming is not recommended if water is unclear and feet cannot be seen when water reaches the knees.
