Peneco is a coastal bathing water located on an urban beach with intensive use in Albufeira. The beach features golden sand and is surrounded by high steep limestone cliffs with houses visible at the top. A large distinctive cliff formation extends from the middle of the beach. The beach extends 330 metres along the waterfront.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09 of June 3rd. Monitoring frequency: monthly. Microbiological contamination may occur due to malfunction of sanitation or rainwater collection infrastructure, typically during heavy rainfall events causing surface run-off or overflows. In the 2024 bathing season, bathing was advised against or prohibited for 2 days due to short-term pollution events.

Risks

Short-term pollution events are scarce but possible due to occasional malfunctions in sanitation and rainwater infrastructure or during intense precipitation. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is uncommon. Phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
