Pipady Est is a beach in Toulon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, with a mixed composition of pebbles, small stones and sand. The beach is 130 metres long and 11 metres wide, with a south-facing orientation and open configuration. It is managed by the Municipality of Toulon and experiences high visitor numbers during the summer season.

Water Quality

Microbiological monitoring based on detection of faecal contamination indicators including Escherichia coli and faecal enterococci. Regulatory analysis conducted by regional health authority (ARS) and self-monitoring by TPM community service provider. First water quality analysis campaign conducted in 2011. Chemical pollution risks identified from maritime traffic including hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and PCBs. Biological pollution risks include jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca, Aurelia aurita), cyanobacteria, macro algae and micro algae (Ostreopsis ovata). Macro debris pollution present, predominantly plastics (70-80% of coastal debris).

Risks

Continuous maritime traffic from port operations opposite the bathing zone presents risks of microbiological pollution from wastewater discharge, chemical pollution from bilge water containing hydrocarbons, and macro debris pollution. Dominant wind patterns influence pollution displacement: northerly winds push pollution toward the coast increasing persistence at the bathing site; southerly winds disperse pollution offshore. Jellyfish species present include highly urticating Pelagia noctiluca capable of causing drowning. Cyanobacteria proliferation risk from high organic matter, nitrates and phosphates combined with water temperatures of 15-30°C and calm conditions. Macro and micro algae proliferation associated with elevated nutrient levels and increased water temperature. Macro debris including plastic, glass, metal and fishing equipment present physical injury risks.
