Étang de Berre is a coastal lagoon with natural tributaries including the Arc, Touloubre, and Cadière rivers. The water body has variable characteristics across 16 monitored bathing beaches, with different sediment types and hydrodynamic conditions.

Location

Étang de Berre, located in the Provence region of southern France. Multiple bathing beaches including Plage de Robinsons (Rognac), Plage de Champigny, Plage des Marettes, Plage de Romaniquette, and others around the lagoon.

Season

Monitoring season typically May to September.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified into four categories: excellent, good, sufficient, or insufficient. Regulatory thresholds for coastal and transitional waters: Excellent (intestinal enterococci ≤100 CFU/100ml, E. coli ≤250 CFU/100ml at 95th percentile); Good (≤200 and ≤500 CFU/100ml); Sufficient (≤185 and ≤500 CFU/100ml at 90th percentile). Plage de Robinsons classified as Excellent in 2024 (also 2022, 2023); Good in 2021. Monitoring includes minimum 4 samples per season.

Risks

Three beaches identified as sensitive to storm episodes: Champigny, Marettes, and Romaniquette, which have shown elevated E. coli contamination following rainfall events. Wastewater treatment plant malfunctions during heavy storms can cause bacteriological contamination via the Arc river near Plage de Champigny. Storm-related closures of 24 hours recommended after rainfall exceeding 10 mm in 24 hours. Multiple discharge points identified near bathing zones (Plage de Robinsons: 1 elevated, 1 moderate, 7 low-level discharges within 1000 m).
